Dial ///M for Marketing

From the depths of the intarwebs –

BMW will introduce a new range of performance-orientated M division-developed diesel models later this year. The new oil-burners will get an initial public airing at the Geneva motor show in March and are set to reach the UK later this year.

The four-wheel-drive X5 M50d and X6 M50d will arrive first, in June. Rear-wheel-drive M550d saloon and M550d Touring models engineered specifically for right-hand drive markets are tipped to go on sale in October. The rear-drive pair will come to the UK in place of the four-wheel-drive M550d xDrive saloon and Touring variants that will be offered elsewhere in left-hand drive only.

The four cars represent an M division first, with all running a newly developed version of BMW’s 3.0-litre, six-cylinder diesel engine.

The new powerplant is fitted with a triple-turbo induction system that BMW sources suggest is set to revolutionise the efficiency and performance credentials of traditional combustion engines, in both diesel and petrol formats.

The new models will form the basis of what BMW has dubbed its ‘M Performance’ range. They have been conceived to slot into their respective line-ups between the top-performing standard model and full-blown M model in terms of outright performance, dynamic ability, equipment levels and price. In the case of the M550d saloon, this is between the 550i and M5.

The new M-developed diesel engine comprehensively outguns BMW’s widely used twin-turbo 3.0-litre in-line six. It develops 376bhp between 4000 and 4400rpm and a sturdy 545lb ft of torque from 2000 to 3000rpm.

These figures are 74bhp and 103lb ft higher than those of the most powerful version of BMW’s existing twin-turbo 3.0-litre six, as fitted to the 740d, giving it a spectacular — by diesel standards — 126bhp and 182lb ft per litre.

Although 176bhp shy of the M5’s twin-turbo 4.4-litre petrol V8, the M550d saloon boasts 44lb ft more.

In each of the M Performance models, the new engine is mated to a beefed-up version of the existing eight-speed automatic gearbox and, for left-hand drive markets, a specially tuned version of BMW’s four-wheel drive system. Together, this set-up gives the M550d xDrive saloon 0-62mph acceleration of 4.7sec — just 0.3sec slower than the new M5.

Is nothing sacred BMW?  Your M division is being raped by the suits.
Remember when BMW used to say that ///M cars would remain naturally aspirated?
Remember when they said they’d never make a diesel ///M?
Remember when they said they’d never make an SUV ///M?
Remember when they said that ///M cars were only RWD?

BMW, I am disappoint.

Kevin is wrapping up the building parts with the plumbing and exhaust system.  Once the car is together we’re planning to go get tuned on a FWD dyno, and then connect the AWD afterwards.

Kevin has been busy.

Harness still needs to be fitted.  Eventually I’ll install a racing seat.  The harness and the firewall are only included as they’re required by local ice racing safety regulations – otherwise I’d have said screw it.

I’m sure by now you’ve all seen the god-awful Jennifer Lopez advertisement for the Fiat 500.

Well, in case you haven’t – here it is –

Of course, this was ill advised by the Chrysler Fiat Group, who tried selling another piece of crap by using a celebrity – Celine Dion for the Chrysler Crossfire –

And you surely know that the Jennifer Lopze advertisement for the Fiat 500 was completely faked –

She used a body double to film scenes in The Bronx while claiming that to be “her world” – when she shot her scenes in Los Angeles.  Sure is Jenny from the Block, huh?

While Lopez, Fiat, the automotive firm’s PR people, and its Detroit ad agency would have consumers believe that the star deigned to return home to filma low-speed pilgrimage through the gritty streets of her hometown, she actually never set foot in the Bronx during the filming of the Fiat spots.

Instead, the role of “Jenny from the Block” was played by a body double, according to two sources familiar with the commercial production. While the Lopez lookalike was actually behind the wheel in the Bronx, Lopez herself was in Los Angeles, where she was filmed inside a Fiat 500.

The shots of the actress were artfully merged to make it appear that she was tooling around New York City’s poorest borough. Big Block, a Los Angeles digital production studio, was hired to merge live action footage with computer-generated imagery to make it appear as if Lopez was in the Bronx.

Well, now she’s getting flack for supporting terrorists –

In an open letter to Lopez released on Thursday, the president for United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) wrote: “By endorsing Fiat, you are serving as a spokesperson for a company that freely does business with Iran, a regime that is developing an illegal nuclear weapons program, financing and sponsoring terrorist groups including al-Qaeda, has killed American and NATO soldiers and is recognized as one of the world’s leading human rights violators.”
“(Fiat also) produces vehicles that are reportedly used by the Iranian regime as platforms to stage gruesome public executions.”

Chrysler – if you want to sell me a car, just show me a Dodge Viper doing sweet heaters.

Sweet, sweet heaters.

Kevin has been working on the fuel cell and the fire wall necessary to protect me from it.  Right now the fuel sender specs were wrong so he’s dealing with the people who sent it and trying to get the right one.

I just purchased some Hawk HP Plus pads ( )  from ECS Tuning ( ) for the front and rear.

On to the pictures of the mock-up for the firewall
